Riace or ... almost paradise on earthPosted by Piervincenzo (Reggio Calabria, Italy) on 17 May 2009 in People & Portrait and Portfolio. When I shot this pic I thought it would sell well on newspapers above all because of the recent new stricter laws on immigration. This was not the case. Not even a few lines, except local newspapers, gave the news of this project that is made in Riace, a village near Reggio Calabria at the souther tip of Italy. The project is called 'citta futura' and it is about welcoming migrants in the village where they find houses and jobs. This is how the city solved two problems: 1. there are more people now moving into Riace than people emigrating outside the region of Calabria or outside Italy; 2. migrants helps keeping alive the traditions of the village. This is a sharp response to the Northern League and Berlusconi's government policy on immigration. Of course you'll never hear such a story anywhere.
